Why Choose Words Carefully

The picture we are looking at today, is one of a pool of water. In a forest, a pasture, at the end of your city’s rain water drainage system. A pool of water wider than the widest stride your legs are capable of, so you can not escape it. It is yours.

“The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook.” Proverbs 18:4

That’s the pool, formed by the words you speak. Now notice who is standing in front of the pool.

“A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calls for blows. A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, and they go down into the inmost body.” Proverbs 18:6-8

Oh. It’s a fool. How to make a fool of yourself?

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21

The pool is not outside. The words we speak stay with us. The “inmost body” can also be translated as “rooms of the heart”. The words we speak run downhill and become the pool deep within us. The question now is, what is the fruit of stagnation?

E-U-my gosh. Gross.

“[The Lord’s words of wisdom] are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. Proverbs 4:22

When one of those “creeps on the earth” mentioned in Genesis cuts you off in traffic, or the boss makes another impossible demand, or you are just having one-of-those-days, just shut your mouth and don’t say it aloud.

Good words, living water. Bad words, dead water.
