“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7
The key to winning your personal struggle is found in those words. But success does not rest on that scripture, it rests on your shoulders. “Submit” is a word that demands a choice be made. Problem is, the one time you do not want to make a choice to submit to God is when you are preparing to enjoy your favorite sin.
“For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.” Romans 7:15, and you prove it every single time.
The other important time to “therefore submit” is after you have lost the battle.
“If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; for so you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the Lord will reward you.” Proverbs 25:21-22
Sin was defeated when Jesus said, “It is finished.” The enemy you blame for all your problems is not the roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Your greatest enemy is yourself. Your flesh tempted you, not Enemy. The last thing you want to do is spend time in the word. You don’t feel like it. But hey, you didn’t feel like it when you made the choice to chase pleasure either.
Bread is the broken body of the Savior, it is scripture, it is also fellowship with other believers. Water, the living water that flows from Him, it is worship and prayer.
Submit is a real pain in the behind.
